A person presses a button on a digital blood pressure monitor while wearing a cuff on their arm at a table.

Normal blood pressure for adults is 120/80 or less. It is lower for children depending on their age and height. High blood pressure tends to run in families, and its incidence increases with age. High blood pressure does not always cause symptoms, so it is important to check it. Confirming the blood pressure value is also important. One way to do this is to take your machine to your next appointment. You can compare the blood pressure you get with your equipment with that of the clinic.

Why do I need to lower my blood pressure if it is high?

High blood pressure can cause permanent damage to your organs and lead to complications such as heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, etc.

If my blood pressure is high (over 120/80 consistently), how do I lower it?

It depends on how high. Your blood pressure goal may be different depending on other factors.

How do I lower my blood pressure?

Generally, if less than 140/90 you can often lower with lifestyle changes.

  • Weight loss (if overweight).
  • Diet low in sodium, high in fiber, fish, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Lowering caffeine and alcohol intake.
  • Avoid certain medications and substances (Oral contraceptives can cause high blood pressure in some women, NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Aleve), any stimulant- including those found in some decongestants, weight loss products, and illicit drugs can increase blood pressure.
  • Exercise.
  • Supplements.

If 140/90 or above consistently, you could still lower it with lifestyle changes but may need to add on medications temporarily or permanently depending on how high.

  • Starting blood pressure medication does not mean you’ll continue to take it forever.
  • Lowering your blood pressure as quickly as possible will prevent damage to vital organs (eyes, heart, kidneys). You can take your medication and save your organs while working on a healthier lifestyle.
  • Regardless of what you decide, check your blood pressure frequently with the proper technique to confirm that whatever you do works.
